A Dallas-based biotech company, Colossal Biosciences, says it has brought back the long-extinct dire wolf, making it the worldโs first successfully โde-extinctedโ animal. The company has announced the birth of three pups โ Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi โ created using ancient DNA, cloning, and gene-editing technology. Scientists used DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old ear bone to identify 20 key genetic traits that set dire wolves apart from their closest living relatives, gray wolves. Romulus and Remus, born on October 1, 2024, are now 6 months old, about 4 feet long and weighing 80 pounds. Khaleesi, born on January 30, 2025, is 3 months old and showing similar growth. The three animals now live on a secure, 2,000-acre site surrounded by 10-foot-tall zoo-grade fencing, with round-the-clock monitoring by drones, cameras, and guards.--Technology Innovation
